December Web Tip: Copyright and Reminders
As we near the end of the year, here are some copyright reminders and best practices to keep in mind as you update your web pages.
Copyright Reminder
It is very important to adhere to copyright law and standards on your websites - particularly in the use of imagery.
- The USD Gallery has a wide array of USD-specific imagery that can be used at your convenience.
- If you use stock imagery, please be sure it is obtained legally from a paid source such as iStock.
- Alternatively, you can select photos that are in the public domain (i.e. copyright-free). You can find public domain images on sites like Wikimedia Commons and Flickr Commons.
- You can take your own photos relating to the content and needs of your website.

Accessibility:
- Images – Images should have an appropriate "alt tag". The alt tag is a description of the image, and any text contained in the image must be placed in the alt text as well (images that have embedded text should generally be avoided).
- Headings – All page titles are automatically set as heading 1 by default. You must use headings in a sequential order (heading 2, followed by heading 3, etc.).
- Descriptive Link Text – Avoid using generic, or duplicate text for links. This is most frequently seen with the use of "click here."

Examples:
- Updating any application/deadline information for your department.
- Make sure your links to current information and newsletters are correct.
- Reviewing and confirming hours and contact information - so that users can still access your services and contact your staff.
