December Web Tip: Compare with Current, Best Practices and Reminders
As we near the holiday season and end of the year, here is an update on the Compare with Current feature in Cascade, and a few other friendly reminders and best practices as you update and review your web pages.
Compare with Current Feature Enhancements:
In Cascade, when reviewing workflows, page versions or looking at your draft, there is a "Compare with Current" feature that can display markup and highlights when compared to the current, live page. This is an internally developed tool, and recent enhancements include an expanded list of markups and highlight colors, accessibility heading and messy code indicators, and more.
Click here to learn how to use the Compare with Current tool and list of features.
Workflow Reminder:
As you begin to review and submit edits to the websites you maintain, please keep in mind that every edit goes through workflow. The workflow process allows for content review (from your team) and requires technical review by University Web Services. We strive to actively review and expedite workflows in technical review, many times a day, but please allow for a 24-hour turnaround time.
If there are urgent workflows with time-sensitive content, please submit a web request via our online web request form and we can help expedite.
Accessibility Reminders:
- Images – Images should have an appropriate "alt tag." Any text contained in the image must be placed in the alt (images that have embedded text should generally be avoided).
- Headings – Never use "heading 1." All page titles are automatically set as heading 1 by default. You must use headings in a sequential order (heading 1, followed by heading 2, etc.).
- Descriptive Link Text – Avoid using generic, or duplicate text for links. This is most frequently seen with the use of "click here."
For more information about accessibility, please view this accessibility documentation.
Content Reminders:
Now is the time to make sure that the websites you maintain are up-to-date and provide the correct and current information to your users.
Examples:
- Updating any coronavirus-related information for your team and department.
- Make sure your links to current information and newsletters are correct.
- Reviewing and confirming contact information - so that users can still access your services and contact your staff.
If you have any questions please let us know via our online web request form.
Thank you,
University Web Services
