June Web Tip: Google Analytics 4

This is a notice that as of July 1, 2023, the USD website is migrating to the new Google Analytics 4 platform. As maintainers of USD websites, you might have access to Google Analytics properties or may have received alerts from Google regarding the new platform.

Regarding the main university website (www.sandiego.edu and everything within), we have successfully migrated to Google Analytics 4, so no action is required from you.

Google's previous version, Universal Analytics, will stop processing data on July 1 and will no longer be available moving forward (historical data will be archived and available).

Next Steps

  • If you only manage a university website in Cascade CMS, then no action is required of you (we have already migrated all of the main university website).
  • If you manage your own USD Wordpress site (sites.sandiego.edu), you will have the ability to insert your own Google Analytics 4 Measurement ID via the analytics plugin.
  • If you manage your own website that is separate from the main university website, you will need to transition over to Google Analytics 4. You can click here to learn more about that process from Google Support.

Google Analytics 4 Takeaways

Here are 3 main takeaways from Google Analytics 4:

  • The dashboard display has changed considerably, now with a focus on insights, recommendations and advertising/reporting. Some metrics have changed as well, however general information such as page traffic or time on page is still available.
  • In terms of filtering, "Views" no longer exist in Google Analytics 4. You will need to use the "Reports" section moving forward, where you can generate new reports in real-time or save your report and add it to your own "library."
  • Scheduled emails (monthly reports sent to email, etc.) are not currently available in Google Analytics 4. Viewing reports, alerts or events will need to be done within the dashboard. You can then check a real-time report, or view a saved report and adjust for the desired timeframe.
