August Web Tip: Best Practices and Reminders
In preparation for the upcoming semester, here are a few friendly reminders and best practices as you begin to update your web pages.
Internal Links:
In Cascade, when linking to documents or other pages in your site (or other sites/pages across www.sandiego.edu), create the link as an "internal link" and use the internal asset navigator (or "IAN" more details on IAN see here). It is important to always link to other USD pages on www.sandiego.edu as internal links. This ensures that if a page gets moved or renamed, the link to that page automatically gets updated, resulting in fewer broken links on the USD website.
We have documentation on linking steps and practices available in our DocHub.
Workflows:
Workflows are approved throughout normal business hours - but if you have emergency content or need an expedited review, please submit a request via our online web request form. There is an advertised turnaround time of 1 business day, however we strive to review submissions as soon as possible.
Accessibility Reminders:
- Images – Images should have an appropriate "alt tag." Any text contained in the image must be placed in the alt (images that have embedded text should generally be avoided).
- Headings – Never use "heading 1." All page titles are automatically set as heading 1 by default. You must use headings in a sequential order (heading 2, followed by heading 3, etc.).
- Descriptive Link Text – Avoid using generic or duplicate text for links. This is most frequently seen with the use of "click here."
For more information about accessibility, please view this accessibility documentation.
If you have any questions, please let us know via our online web request form.
Thank you,
