June Web Tip: Transition to Microsoft Bing for Campus Search
In a move to continue to modernize its web infrastructure and improve the search experience for students, faculty and visitors, the University of San Diego has transitioned the campus website to use Microsoft Bing as the primary search engine.
Students, faculty and staff can access the new Bing-powered search by visiting the university's website at www.sandiego.edu/search.
As web maintainers, prioritizing your website's SEO will positively impact your website's visibility, not just for external search engines but also for visitors to the University website. Please use relevant keywords, linking internally and externally when appropriate, and use correct accessibility techniques, to increase your page's visibility and relevance in search results.
In the coming months, the university also plans to integrate Microsoft Copilot, the company's generative AI assistant, into the search experience. Copilot will enable users to ask complex questions and get intelligent, customized responses. This represents the next evolution of search, moving beyond displaying page-level results to understanding and summarizing information.
The rollout of Bing and future Copilot integration is part of the university's broader digital transformation efforts. The university encourages all users to provide feedback on the new search functionality as it continues to be refined and enhanced over time.
